Kearston nindizhinikaaz, nindoodem mukwa.
I am a registered midwife who has recently completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery at Laurentian University. I am delighted to be joining the Roots Community Midwives practice starting in Summer 2019.
I am a proud First Nations Algonquin woman, with roots in Northern Ontario-Quebec. I speak both English and French fluently, with some knowledge in Anishinaabemowin (Ojibway). Prior to the Midwifery Education Program (MEP), I started my University studies in Nursing. I quickly realized my passion for the midwifery philosophy of care, and was accepted into the MEP the following year. During my time in the MEP, I completed various obstetrical and pediatric placements across Northern and Southern Ontario. I have also obtained a Bachelors of Arts in Indigenous Studies, which has informed my work as a midwife.
My inspiration for a career in midwifery started with my sister, who has 6 children. She taught me to respect pregnancy as a state of health, and childbirth as a normal process. I am committed to providing equal access to culturally safe, quality maternity care to Squamish & surrounding areas. I believe in the importance of evidence-based informed choice, and the positive impact this kind of care can have on an individual’s childbearing experience.
I am grateful to be involved in your care, and look forward to meeting you!
